GROENEVELDT
The works of Pieter Groeneveldt (1889-1982) are among the most sought after of all
contemporary Dutch ceramists. After graduating from the Rijksacademie in 1914 he worked in all
of the arts – painting, sculpture and eventually ceramics. Groeneveldt was the owner of the tony
den Haag florist shop, Sheherazade. The lack of attractive vessels for arrangements led him to more
experiments in ceramics. This led to the development of many innovative and unique textures and
glazes that he would become famous for. He was soon producing a wide range of contemporary
pieces, initially sold through Sheherazade. Groeneveldt opened his ceramics studio in 1925 in Wassenaar. In 1938 he moved his studio to Voorschoten, where ceramics were produced until
1972, when it was sold to the Dutch ceramics company, Delfoss. Groeneveldt continued
thereafter to work from his home up until the time he died in 1982 at the age of 93.
